What to Expect When Your Toddler is Being a Toddler: From your favorite Northwest Arkansas Newborn Photographer

As a new parent, you may be excited to capture those precious moments of your newborn and their siblings together. However, you may also be worried about how your toddler will behave during the photoshoot. Don't worry! It's normal for toddlers to be wiggly, run around, and not follow instructions. As a professional photographer with years of experience, I understand that kids will be kids, and they are the boss. In this blog, I'll share what you can expect from your toddler during a newborn session and how we manage to get those perfect sibling poses.

Safety First: Laying Down Poses and Posing Options

Before we talk about sibling poses, I want to reassure you that safety is our top priority when it comes to newborn photography. We never force a newborn into a pose that may be uncomfortable or unsafe for them. All our newborn poses are done laying down to ensure their safety and comfort. We also ensure that the newborn is never left unattended, and we have a spotter at all times. However, if your wiggly one isn’t wanting to lay down, we have other safe options that involve a parent holding your newborn. We will always be flexible in posing options to optimize pleasant interactions with your little ones!

Sibling Poses First

Once we have the newborn settled and comfortable, we move on to sibling poses. We do this first because toddlers have a shorter attention span, and we want to capture those precious moments before they lose interest. We also have dad or grandparent bring siblings separate so that we can start immediately doing photos once they arrive. This way, we have a solid 20 minutes before toddlers get bored. We try to keep the session as short as possible to make it easier for everyone.

Motivators for Smiles

We understand that it's not easy to get a toddler to sit still and smile for the camera. That's why we have motivators on hand, such as food, music, or screen time. We try to make the session as fun and engaging as possible for the toddler. We also take breaks when needed and let the toddler run around to burn off some energy.

Patience is Key

As I mentioned earlier, kids will be kids, and we must stay patient. We understand that toddlers may not always follow instructions or sit still, and that's okay. We have plenty of experience with children, and we know how to work with them to get the best shots possible. We never force a child to do something they don't want to do, and we always follow their lead.

Capturing those sweet exchanges between your newborn and their siblings is something I do best. It's essential to understand that toddlers may not always behave as you expect them to, but that's okay. As professional photographers, we know how to work with children and get the best shots possible. So, sit back, relax, and let us capture those precious moments that you will cherish for a lifetime.
